Wireless Device Testing and Approvals

Global Recognition

Obtaining type approval for wireless devices requires a testing laboratory that is properly accredited, technically experienced and globally connected.   Certification schemes in many countries require properly laboratory accreditation for the agency to find that laboratory's findings acceptable.  CKC offers Global certification testing and agency submittal services for the manufacturers of wireless products. Such services are offered for domestic (FCC) and overseas requirements.

EU Wireless Certifications

CKC Laboratories has over 10 years experience in providing certification testing for European requirements.   Our EU transmitter certification experience even pre-dates the Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (R&TTE) Directive, when we were the only US laboratory capable of providing final EU certification testing for wireless devices.   Currently, our vast experience, internationally recognized accreditation and Conformity Assessment Body status give manufactures the tools they need to meet the essential requirements of the R&TTE Directive.

Certification of transmitters under the R&TTE Directive has two major steps:

1. Testing / Certification

Self-Declaration.  Testing to standards harmonized under the R&TTE directive for EMC, transmitter performance and electrical product safety

OR

Certification.  Testing to standards not harmonized or partially harmonized under the R&TTE directive for EMC, transmitter performance and electrical product safety.  A CAB (Notified Body) Letter of Opinion (Certificate of Conformity) must be obtained. CKC Certification Services can issue Certificates of Conformity as a CAB under the R&TTE Directive.

2. Notification of Non-Harmonized Frequency Use

Letters of Notification to "National" authorities, which in most cases include agency application forms, must be sent to countries where the utilized frequency is not fully harmonized.

CKC Laboratories can provide the necessary, accredited testing for self-declaration or CAB certification.   We can also act as your agency submittal agent, preparing and submitting the necessary documentation, including Letters of Notification, to the proper authorities.

CKC is accredited by A2LA (ISO Guide 17025) to perform the following transmitter tests:

  • EN 300 086-2: EMC and transmitter performance for land mobile radios.
  • EN 300 220-3: EMC and transmitter performance for short-range radio equipment, 25 Hz to 1000 MHz.
  • EN 300 328-2:EMC and transmitter performance wideband / spread spectrum equipment for data transmission in the 2 and 4 GHz ISM band.
  • EN 300 330-2: EMC and transmitter performance for short-range radio equipment, 9 kHz to 25 MHz and inductive loop systems, 9 kHz to 30 MHz.
  • EN 301 489 (1-26): EMC emissions and immunity requirements for transmitters.
  • EN 300 440-2: EMC and transmitter performance for short-range devices in 1 GHz to 25 GHz range.
  • EN 300 422-2 EMC and transmitter performance for wireless microphones in the 25 MHz to 3 GHz range.
  • EN 300 676: EMC and transmitter performance for devices in aeronautical applications operating in the VHF band.

FCC Transmitter Approvals

CKC Laboratories offers FCC Transmitter Approval services for most classifications of commercial wireless devices.  We provide the EMC and transmitter characteristic testing for cellular phones, private radios, PCS devices, wireless audio equipment and others.  Once testing is completed, CKC can act as your submittal agent, providing the necessary reports and other documentation for FCC certification.  Once testing is completed, submission can be made directly to CKC Certification Services, an FCC appointed Telecommunications Certification Body (TCB) for a fast and efficient FCC grant of authorization.

Here is a list of FCC parts that CKC Laboratories is currently qualified to perform testing and report / submittal preparation for:

  • Part 15, Subpart B: emissions requirements that apply to all unintentional radiators, such as receivers
  • Part 15, Subpart C: emissions requirements that apply to low power intentional radiators.
  • Part 2: covers general transmitter characteristic requirements.  Applies to devices not covered by other parts.
  • Part 22: covers technical characteristics for cellular phone transmitters.
  • Part 21: covers technical characteristics for domestic fixed radio transmitters.
  • Part 24: covers technical characteristics of personal communication services (PCS) transmitters.
  • Part 74: subparts that cover technical characteristics of wireless microphones and other low power audio and video transmission devices.
  • Part 87: covers technical characteristics for aviation service devices
  • Part 90: covers technical characteristics of mobile land radio devices.
  • Part 95: covers technical characteristics of personal radio services such as CB and radio controlled devices.

Canada Transmitter Approvals

CKC is also accredited to perform Canadian transmitter testing to meet certification requirements for importation for wireless devices.  In many cases, requirements such as RSS-210 are identical or significantly overlap with FCC requirements.  It is advised that FCC and Canadian testing be done simultaneously to save time and money.  CKC can also act as your agency submittal agent, utilizing our years of experience to obtain your Canadian wireless approvals in a timely, cost effective manner.
